Coexistence Series: DELTA, the installation at Captaloona Art, further explores the themes of balance, transformation, and change by incorporating the symbolic use of the triangle. The triangle (∆), a fundamental geometric shape, carries rich symbolism—representing unity and balance, as well as the concept of perfection. It resonates with tripartite structures such as the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; mind, body, and spirit; birth, life, and death; creation, preservation, and destruction; and the past, present, and future.
The Greek letter Delta (Δ), the fourth letter of the Greek alphabet, shares this symbolism of change. It is often used to represent difference or transformation in mathematics and science, symbolizing shifts in quantities or variables. In geography, a delta refers to a triangular area of low land where a river splits into multiple branches before meeting the sea—embodying change and the constant flow of life.
For Coexistence Series: DELTA, I chose to create two triangles, using 30mm wide elastic multi-coloured bands (18 different colours which is a first time), a decision driven by the gallery's space. The combination of two triangles amplifies the energy, deepening their meaning and emphasizing the interplay between opposites.
Delta and triangle are intertwined symbols of change, transformation, and duality. The branching paths of a river delta mirror the shape of the triangle, both symbols of dynamic systems in constant motion yet anchored in an underlying principle of balance and unity. Together, they invite a deeper reflection on the continuous shifts in life, where forces of change and dualities of existence shape our world. The installation encourages viewers to contemplate how the forces of transformation, balance, and coexistence shape not only our world but also our understanding of existence itself.
